Decorating a Child's Room with Rustic Decor
Decorating a child's room is always fun, especially when it's in a rustic home or cabin. But where do you start?
Here are some steps to consider:
- Decide on a budget. It's up to you if you're going to do a little or a lot (and you don't have to spend a lot to transform a child's room).
- Decide how the room is to be used. Will your child be studying in the room? Having friends over to spend the night? Doing crafts? Using the computer?
- Most children need help with organization. Consider exactly where your child needs help with organizing, for example is it with clothes, toys, books, sports equipment?

- A good place to start is with a "dream file". Start collecting clipping ideas from magazines and printing ideas from the internet (we love pintrest.com) of furnishings and rooms that you love. Photos can be of entire rooms you like, or specific elements, such as a cool bunk bed, poster or storage ottoman.
- Most importantly get your child involved gathering ideas and comparing likes and dislikes.
- Once you have a dream file, you can sit down with your child and discuss colors and the overall style of the room. Which dream photos do both you and your child love? Which concepts make your child really "light up"?
- Does the child’s room need to flow with the rest of the rustic home, or can it be completely different?
- Consider having a theme. Black bear decor, fishing decor or and wildlife themes are easy and fun themes for children's rustic home bedrooms.
- Keep in mind, having a timeless backdrop is an easy way to accommodate your child's changes in interests as they grow. A denim or basic ultra suede bedspread can given a completely different look over the years and seasons by changing out pillow, skirt and sham themes.
- Once you have a style direction, include your child - depending on their age- in the shopping process (what a great way for children to begin to understand budgeting).
- If purchasing all new rustic furnishings isn't a financial priority, consider consignment stores and making projects out of re-furbishing furnishings like bookcases and night tables. These projects can be lots of fun for children to be involved in, particularly when it's for their own rustic bedroom.
- Don't forget details, sometimes changing dresser handles or adding a new lampshade or finial can make a significant difference to a rustic room. As the old adage goes "design is in the details"!
- Murals or borders are something you and your child can paint together and they can broaden a theme or rustic design (and be easily painted over if your child outgrows the theme).
- Sometimes just a few new furnishings such as a soft wildlife bedspread, wildlife pillows or canoe themed throw rug, or some paint can bring a whole new look to a child's rustic decor bedroom.
